☆ Body Cameras Show Police Fatally Shooting Queens Man Holding Scissors

Body camera footage of the police fatally shooting a 19-year-old Queens man in his kitchen in March shows what the police had described as a “chaotic” situation. But the video, released Friday, also renewed criticism of the decision to open fire on the man, who was holding scissors and seemed to be in mental distress. The man, Win Rozario, was declared dead at a hospital after the shooting on March 27, the police said. The New York attorney general’s office released the footage from body-worn cameras as part of its investigation into the shooting. The shooting occurred about three minutes after the officers, Matthew Cianfrocco and Salvatore Alongi, arrived at the scene, according to their videos.

Across the country, police bodycam footage has played an increasing role in raising awareness and understanding about officer-involved shootings. A Chicago police officer gives Dexter Reed several commands before gunfire breaks out. Other bodycam videos show at least two other officers firing toward Reed from across the street in the residential neighborhood. “Upon stopping Mr. Reed, multiple officers surrounded his vehicle while giving verbal commands. “Review of video footage and initial reports appears to confirm that Mr. Reed fired first, striking the officer and four officers returned fire,” the office said.

The Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, will convene a grand jury on Tuesday to hear evidence against a group of men caught on video last month assaulting police officers in Times Square, he said in a statement. CNN —A bird thought to be extinct for 140 years has been rediscovered in the forests of Papua New Guinea. Rediscovering the bird required an expedition team to spend a grueling month on Fergusson, a rugged island in the D’Entrecasteaux Archipelago off eastern Papua New Guinea where the bird was originally documented. The team consisted of local staff at the Papua New Guinea National Museum as well as international scientists from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the American Bird Conservancy. Many members of the community told the team that they hadn’t seen the black-naped pheasant-pigeon in decades, says the news release. So the expedition team placed a camera on a 3,200-foot high ridge near the Kwama River above Duda Ununa, according to the release.
